New to the Ridge? Here are some helpful tips:
o WIND: Shanahan wind gusts can occasionally exceed 100mph typically from November to April--park cars with windshields facing east/away from mountains, delay recycling set-outs for a less windy times, operate west-facing garages/doors with care in between gusts. For more info explore the NCAR weather site:
o TRASH/RECYCLING: Every other Thursday is recycling day. Items should be placed outside by 8 a.m. *avoid wind days* Trash is collected every couple days from dumpster houses. Large items like appliances, doors, etc require a special charge--contact the Home OWNER'S Association to arrange permission/special pick-up.
o FIRE SAFETY: Ashes and BBQ coals should be stored in a metal can OUTDOORS for three days prior to placing them in dumpster houses. Hot embers can survive two days or more amongst otherwise cool ashes. Fireplaces should be inspected annually by a Chimney Sweep--creosote build-up can ignite when paper or trash is illegally burned in the fireplaces.
o AIR QUALITY AND FIREPLACE: Call the Denver Area Air Quality phone number before burning. Denver/Boulder has many days where air quality does not permit burning.
o SUMP PUMPS: Danger! Many residents have had *avoidable* flood losses when their sump pump has failed. Basement townhome units often have a sump pump. Surprisingly, the water table is HIGH on Shanahan Ridge. Pumps should be checked annually for proper function in early spring. Back up pumps and water alarms are recommended. Check with your local pump service or plumber to insure that your water removal system is reliable.
o PARKING/NEIGHBORHOOD ISSUES: Check with your landlord or obtain the Shanahan 5 Home OWNER'S Association guidebook regarding parking and/or neighborhood policies. Parking arises as a frequent issue among adjacent units. Two cars per unit (which includes the space in front of the garage) is the policy.
o WILDLIFE: Feeding deer is illegal and somewhat dangerous. Attracting many deer to one's yard and neighborhood also can attract the natural predator of deer--mountain lions! Lions have been infrequently sighted in recent years at Viele Lake (South Boulder Recreation Center) and throughout the adjoining greenbelt. Care should be taken when hiking/running along area trails especially at sunrise/sunset/night. See the Colorado Division of Wildlife page on "Co-Existing with Wildlife" for info on bears/lions at their website
o TRANSPORTATION: See Ride the RTD SKIP Bus Route article.
o OPEN SPACE: The area directly across from Telluride and south of Smuggler is PRIVATE PROPERTY. This is part of the fourth generation Shanahan Ranch addressed of Foothills Highway. Sandi and Lyn Shanahan are concerned about fire safety and the safety of their livestock. Please avoid any use of smoking materials; avoid area when cattle are present; keep dogs *off* or under strict control, and stay away from ponds/water areas. They appreciate a phone call if you see misuse of their property or anything out of the ordinary .
The area north of Smuggler (at gate) is city open space. See the City of Boulder Open Space
