SCNA Phase I Survey Results
Last fall, the Shingle Creek Neighborhood Association (SCNA) mailed out approximately 1148 surveys to residents, and property owners in the Shingle Creek neighborhood. There was an 11% return rate, of which 122 were received in time to be tabulated for the survey.
In reviewing the results of the survey, it is important to remember that, 1) not every respondent answered every question, and 2) all percentages were rounded off. These two factors help to explain why the total responses may not equal 100%.
The neighborhood was divided into four areas. Each area was sent a different paper color survey.
Green surveys were mailed to the area bound by W: Queen Ave N; E: Humboldt Ave N, N: 51st Ave N; SL 49th Ave N. A total of 197 surveys were mailed to this quadrant. A total of 40 surveys were tabulated from the “green” area.
Gold surveys were mailed to the area bounded by W:Queen Ave N; E: Humboldt Ave N: N: 53rd Ave N; S:51st Ave N. A total of 350 surveys were mailed to this quadrant. A total of 29 surveys were tabulated from the “gold” area.
Blue surveys were mailed to the area bounded by W: Xerxes Ave N; E:Queen Ave N: 51st Ave N; S: 49th Ave N. A total of 29 surveys were tabulated from the “blue” area.
Violet surveys were mailed to the area bounded by W: Xerxes Ave N, E”Russell Av eN, N:53rd Ave N, S:51st Ave N. A total of 261 surveys were sent to this quadrant. A total of 24 surveys were tabulated from the “violet” area.
43% of the returns came from the west half of the Shingle Creek Neighborhood from the Queen Ave N divide.
57% of the returns came from the east half of the Shingle Creek Neighborhood from the Queen Ave N divide.
53% of the returns came from the north half of the Shingle Creek neighborhood from 51st Ave N divide.
47% of the returns came from the south half of the Shingle Creek neighborhood from the 51st Ave N divide.Community Environment Highlights:
*Overall, living conditions in the Shingle Creek neighborhood was rated as excellent to god by 78% of the respondents. 18% rated it fair to poor.
*Three main reasons why residents choose this neighborhood: 1) Convenient Location, 2) Affordable housing 3)Primarily residential
Priority Concerns & Satisfaction with Services: These responses rated top one or two under the very good/good category with these percentages.
*Physical Environment: Natural environment &Parks and recreation 73% Very good
*Social Environment: Crime and safety 48% very good response, Interracial Harmony 40%
Housing:
*91 % of the respondents were owner-occupants
*Noted improvement in resale value
*Window replacement and other home improvements
rate 1 and 2 on list of projects.
Safety:
*81% feel very good about their personal safety in their home
*54% feel very good and safe outside their home
*47% of the respondents feel the neighborhood has remained the same in the past five years, 4% feel it’s safer, 25% feel it’s less safe, and 24% have lived here less than 5 years.
*92% of the respondents rated street/alley lighting very important item for dealing with crime and safety issues
Schools and Education:
*Very limited respondents had children living or going to the Minneapolis school system.
Environment:
*95% of the respondents rated Air and Water quality very important for the health of their families
*94% for noise pollution and 84% for Light pollution
Parks:
*Respondents had limited activity at the park due to lack of children, children living at home but used the Wading pool the most
Business and Community Development
*24% of the respondent indicated the neighborhood needed more service businesses
Citizen Participation:
*77% of the respondents read the SCNA newsletter/Camden News
*Top neighborhood activity is the SC Clean-up
Demographics:
*Most of the respondents have lived in the neighborhood between 10-20 years, were between 45-59, were mostly female
