Fall Lawn & Garden Tips

Aug 24, 2008

House plants should be moved back indoors when temperatures drop into the low 60?’s. Wash summered plants to reduce insects coming into the home. Reduce fertilizations as light levels decrease.
Fall is a great time to plant new trees and shrubs, replenish mulch layer, and prune dead limbs.
Early September (between Labor day and October 15th) is the best time to thatch and overseed thin bluegrass or fescue lawns. Early September is also a great time to fertilize lawns. Key decisions to make in this process include choosing a good winterizer fertilizer and applying the correct amount. Although more expensive, controlled release nitrogen fertilizers are highly suggested for lawn use. Fertilizer labels will often suggest the amount needed to cover your yard. If the lawn is dry, fertilize right after a rain or irrigate ahead of time for the best results.
