The March meeting of the Silvercroft Neighborhood Association was held March 13, 2001 at the El Rio Center.
Vice President Clark Haney brought the meeting to order. First order of business was elections of officers. As some of the nominees had dropped out of the election and due to the absence of the current president it was decided to postpone the election of officers until the April meeting.
POLICE REPORT
Officer Diaz of the Tucson Police Department attended the meeting. He reported that our neighborhood crime stats had improved overall. This he said was due to the cooperation of the residents. However, with the new Albertson's store being part of the stat report we showed a marked increase in larceny cases. He said there was at least a call a day to the Albertson's store. He also reported an increase in transients hanging around the dumpsters at Albertson?’s. Also, there has been an increase in the traffic and traffic accidents near Speedway and Silverbell.
Officer Diaz continued on the subject of juveniles out in the neighborhood past curfew. He reported that the majority of the offenders were not from this neighborhood; they are coming in from the Southside neighborhoods. He reminded us that curfew for children under 16 is 1 0 PM and for those 16-18 years old to curfew is midnight. He asked that we call him or TPD if we see any suspicious activity involving juveniles; a crime does not have to be committed before you call.
He also reported narcotic activities had declined in the neighborhood.
STREETLIGHTS
Regina Romero, Program Coordinator of the Pima County Administrators Office of Youth, Families and Neighborhood Reinvestment was present at the meeting to update us on the proposed lighting project for our neighborhood. The protest period ended March 28, 2001. The city has told Frank that 17% of us sent in written protests. So, we will have the lights!!!
The Tucson Urban League has assistance available for help in paying the assessed cost of the proposed lighting improvements. Regina urged those who qualify to fill out an application prior to receiving the bill for the assessment. We will give you the information on who to contact in an upcoming newsletter.
SETTING GOALS
Jeff Schildberg continued with defining our goals to improve our neighborhood. We proposed a 'back to basics' plan for neighborhood cleanup. A committee was formed to brainstorm possibilities and report back at the April meeting.
