Challenges Facing Sloan’s Lake Citizen’s Group

Apr 06, 2007

By Marie Peacock

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Sloan?’s Lake Citizens Group. And what a wild ride those 30 years have been. We?’ve tackled many issues; made a better name for the neighborhood and stood up to those who wanted to make this community a ?“dumping ground?”. We?’ve seen many people come and go through the city offices that support and protect us and through our neighborhoods. We miss those that have passed on and those who moved to greener pastures. We cherish those friends and ?“family?” who are still among us.

This year also marks a huge decline in our membership. We have possibly 5000+ homes in our neighborhood area. We continue to print our newsletter every other month and send reminder postcards for the meetings. We went to every other month as the cost of printing and postage was no longer being covered by member dues. The cost of ads is also not covering the cost of printing. All of this is reducing the amount of funds we have to help out organizations in need in our community, sponsor youth programs and tackle the problems we face as a community. Grants from the city, corporations and larger non-profit agencies are harder to come by in these times of economic uncertainty.

We all have busier, fuller lives than ever before. There are many attractions/distractions constantly pulling at everyone, making focus difficult at best. But this is your community, and while it does not always require your focus, it will always benefit from your participation. It?’s hard to add another meeting, another requirement on your time, to an already full schedule. But your contribution in the form of dues guarantees that those who do have the time can continue the efforts of the oldest active citizen?’s group in the City of Denver. Your attendance at meetings is always a benefit to both you and the organization. We strive to keep you informed of happenings, problems that need attention and any other issues that arise. We can continue only so long without your support for your organization. We are only as strong as our membership. Please send in your dues in the small sum of $12.00 per household for the year to SLCG, c/o Marie Peacock, 2689 Irving St., Denver, CO 80211. Senior dues are still only $5.00, and we welcome any contribution you make over your dues. As we are a non-profit organization, those extra funds are tax deductible.

We are also interested to hear your comments, questions and ideas for speakers at our monthly meetings. Thanks for your help in making this a great neighborhood.
