Carol Boigon, Denver City Councilwoman at-large, is proposing an ordinance that will allow child care centers in all residential neighborhoods. To fully understand the proposed ordinance, we must first understand the distinction between child care centers and child care facilities. According to Denver's zoning code, a "child care center" refers to a facility that is not located in a person's home and that cares for children ages 6 weeks to sixteen years of age.

Child care centers currently in existence are operating in facilities such as public schools, church preschool programs, daycare centers and private schools. Councilwoman Boigan believes that the zoning code provisions are outdated and should be updated to accommodate the child care requirements that are needed by parents in today's society.

Councilwoman Boigan has been meeting with neighborhood representatives, child care providers, parent groups and other community leaders about this issue. She has sought the input from the Sloan's Lake Citizen's Group regarding the proposed ordinance. Plan to attend the March 8th SLCG meeting to learn more.
