People House began offering an affordable child-counseling program this past spring. The program offers counseling for children and families in the following areas: depression, anxiety/phobias, anger management, conflict resolution, grief, self esteem issues, sexual abuse, eating disorders, and attention problems.
The cost of counseling ranges from $15 to $40 per hour. Clients choose the appropriate fee based on income and life circumstances.
The Affordable Child Counseling Program also offers internships for master level counseling students and post-master level counselors acquiring experience for professional licensure with the State of Colorado. They will be selected based on life experience, personal development, and prior training in issues related to children. In addition to supervision, the People House program will serve as a training seminar on issues of child development, play therapy, and the special ethics of working with children.
The program is supervised by Dominque Tavernier MA, LMFT, who brings an extensive background in child therapy to People House. She was the founding director of the East Bay Agency for Children’s Therapeutic Nursery Program in Oakland, California. She also directed a home visitation program for the same agency. She is certified as a Marriage and Family Therapist and has worked as a trainer for Early Head Start.
The mission of People House in providing this service program is to offer affordable counseling to adults, children, and families with limited resources or who do not have mental health insurance who are sincerely interested in improving their lives.
