Scrape Offs in Northwest Denver

The changing face of our northwest Denver neighborhoods

If the changing face of our northwest Denver neighborhoods is of concern to you, you are not alone.

On February 10 a meeting of sixteen northwest Denver residents from the Sloan’s Lake, West Highlands and Berkeley areas was held with Councilman Rick Garcia. Shirley Schley, who facilitated the meeting gave a summary of concerns about the number of planned scrape offs of single-family homes in the area to be replaced by multiplexes.

Items that we discussed included the increase in density that the addition of multiplexes would create, the loss of openness currently enjoyed as well as the diversity and character identified within the existing neighborhoods. Several options were discussed at length, including establishing historic districts, a 180-day moratorium, zoning changes, architectural review, block by block design guidelines, and developer incentives. A summary of the recommendations will be presented at the Sloan’s Lake Citizen’s Group general membership meeting scheduled for March 8. Neighborhood input is being sought so residents of the Sloan’s Lake area are encouraged to attend the general membership meeting to assist in identifying key concerns and possible solutions to be pursued.

Additional meetings are scheduled with Councilman Garcia on Thursday, March 9 and Saturday, March 11.
