Southern Wayne Neighborhood Organization

Southern Wayne Neighborhood Organization Meeting 4-17-2003

Apr 20, 2003

There were 2 guest speakers and 19 neighbors in attendance.

The meeting started with Wess Richardson introduction Joe McKenny the principle of Southern Wayne Jr. High School and Dan Wilson Assistance Principle.

Joe McKenny started by asking the names of all our neighbors around the room, as he likes to get to know the neighbors of the school. He did let us know we would still be able to hold our meetings there even with the new remodeling going on.

Smith & Associates is in the design stage of Southern Wayne Jr. High School. The size of the school will grow by 100,000 sq. feet, all four directions. The school will still remain as one level. There is planning for a new entrance from Lynhurst, new school rooms, and some updating of the auditorium. There is some land to be purchased that has not been finalized at this time. The remodeling is starting in May 2003. The estimated cost of for the remodeling is $28 to $29 million dollars. It will take about 2 years to complete. He did go on to say that they were talking about changing the pool to be more of a community type of pool, but it was put on hold at this time for budget concerns. If the students would need a meet type of pool, the students could go over to Ben Davis High School, as they have an Olympic size pool there. If there were an interest in a community pool concept, he would push for it. The neighbors agreed it would nice to have a community pool in the area.

The plans are for the fall of 2005 is that Southern Wayne is to have 7th and 8th only. There will be two 7th and 8th grades schools, and a Freshman Center. There will be new district lines, for the schools. He does estimate that Southern Wayne will have 1200 students, when it becomes a 7th and 8th grade school.

There is a Time Capsule that was buried at the School, when it was first built. Joe McKenny has informed Smith & Associates about the Time Capsule. He wants to have the opening of the Time Capsule, and invite back the alumni of the school to open it. There is not a date planned at this time. The Time Capsule will be buried again, with new items from the current students.

Wess Richardson ended the meeting about the blasting that Martin Marietta is doing close by our neighborhood. If anyone would have any concerns about any blasting damage, please contact David Drinkerard by phone at: 244-7702 or email at ocom221in@yahoo.com.
