Safe Tips on West Nile in SOSNA

In our community

While the West Nile virus, has been prominent in local news all summer along with its affect in other communities. SOSNA residents should remain observant and cautious at home. At this time some communities who have recorded mosquito infestations, are being systematically sprayed to control the condition.

Sitings of dead crows

As we may have noticed there have been many flocks of crows scavenging in SOSNA for months. The birds have been very large and robust, and seemingly healthy. However in the past three weeks there have been dead crows found on Greenview. The first on Aug 10, two more Aug 27 & 30. If SOSNA residents have knowledge of others, e-mail our web site.
Also more important is to call the Detroit Health Dept 313-876-4516 and report any sitings, which are used to compile a statistical base in the event there is an infestation in SOSNA.

Prevention /handling

West Nile virus is transmitted through mosquito bites to birds and later to humans. People are advised to wear long sleeved clothing when gardening or other outside activities, as well as children who are outside. Repellants containg DEET are recommended. Be cautioned to not handle dead birds with bare unprotected hands, dispose of birds using disposable vinyl/latex gloves or inverted double plastic bags.REPORT DEAD or DYING BIRDS.
