The South Suburban Park and Recreation District's Board of Directors has unanimously approved a resolution to place two questions on the ballot in a May 2nd polling place election. Passage of question 4B, a $20 million general obligation bond issue, would provide funding for a recreation center in the southeast area, as well as 11 neighborhood park playground renovations. Additionally, bond funds would provide for more athletic fields, develop parks and would also build a new community center in the Littleton area focusing on senior programs.
The second question going before voters in May (referendum 4A) will ask residents to approve a 1 mill tax increase for open space, parkland acquisition and trail improvements. While this tax levy would sunset in 10 years, it would provide a current funding source to purchase land while it is still available.
If both the bond and the mill levy question are approved, taxes on a $200,000 home in the district would increase $2.75 a month. Capital needs identified by the district's Gold Medal 2020 citizens' committee showed an overall need for $40 million of improvements; however, after careful consideration the board approved a $20 million list of the most pressing needs.
South Suburban will conduct a polling place election at six locations throughout the district on May 2nd from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
