Low-interest Home Improvement Loans
Overland Park, together with Valley View State Bank, offers low-interest home-improvement loans to qualifying residents. These loans are available for exterior home improvements, such as painting, siding, fence repair/replacement, deck repair/ replacement, roofing, driveway, sidewalk, gutters, etc. For more information call 895-6221 (city office) or 381-3311 (the bank).
In this connection, the leaders of each neighborhood have been provided with a copy of an Idea Book, published by the First Suburbs Coalition, showing suggested remodeling for updating various types of post-World War II homes. If you would be interested in borrowing this book with the thought of perhaps expanding your home {as an alternative to moving out of the neighborhood), contact Joan Wagstaff, at 722-4693 (hwagstaff@iearthlink.net).
First Suburbs Remodeling Project
Also, the First Suburbs Coalition, in
partnership with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and the Home Builders Association, is planning to do an Extreme Home Makeover project in a Kansas City metro area neighborhood to demonstrate how to update
an older home to modem standards. To do this, they plan to purchase, remodel, and sell a home as a fund-raiser, to bring attention to remodeling in the first suburbs of Kansas City. They are looking for a post-WWII home in a stable neighborhood at an affordable price. If you know of such a home, you can provide the information to Tristan Cook. Assistant Neighborhood Planner, at (913) 895-6386.

NEWS FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD
A Sad Report
Those of you who read our January newsletter may remember the photo of Ruth Fessler and her great-granddaughter, taken on the occasion of Ruth's 100th birthday, last October. Ruth died in July, and our sympathy goes to the Nelson family. We lost two other of our neighbors in the past few months: Ed Humphrey, on Broadmoor, and Maurice Rubin, on Walmer. Again, our condolences for their families.
And a New Life
On Easter Sunday of this year, Jocelyn and Scott Bennett welcomed into their family Liaden Shea, shown here with big sister Honora Rose.
Neighborhood TV Celebrities
The PBS program, This Old House, recently filmed the installation of a ductless air conditioning system in the 1904 home of Peter and Jenicka Cook, the pillared house at the corner on 67th at Glenwood. Airing of the project is to be sometime in September or October, so keep an eye out for this event.
Theater Outing
In July, a small gathering of Southmoor Gardens neighbors assembled by word of mouth, enjoyed a Barn Players performance of Damn Yankees. We hope to do something like this again in the future. If you would possibly like to be included in a similar impromptu social event, let Joan know, and we will contact you when something is in the offing.
