We were gratified to see a good number of neighbors come to the annual potluck meal for our neighborhood. Approximately 30 people came to enjoy the time together. Brisket and Turkey were provided by the Neighborhood Association. A $2.00 per person donation was requested to cover the cost of the meat. In addition neighbors brought in their favorite cassaroles, salads, and desserts.
It was a time of getting better acquainted with neighbors and meeting people who have newly arrived in the neighborhood.
After everyone had finished eating, Joan Wagstaff, the chairperson for the neighborhood, called our attention to the rezoning issue facing the neighborhood. The discussion was lively and it was clear that the group was beginning to get better organized.
Matters that were discussed included 1)How to approach the coming rezoning meeting on Nov 28, 2) Alternate solutions to the problem, and 3) The need to circulate and sign petitions.
The neighbors learned as well that the Parks Commission is interested in building neighborhood parks throughout Overland Park. We were pleased to hear that they are interesting in backing an effort to purchase the 71st and Metcalf property for that purpose.
It was decided that if we discover it is necessary to have an emergency meeting prior to the Nov. 28th Rezoning Meeting that the neighbors will be notified of the time and place at which the meeting will be held.
The next regular meeting for the Southmoor Gardens Neighborhood Association will be January 17th at 7 p.m. at the Overland Park Community Center.
