What is the Alamo Community College District (ACCD) and Why Should I Care?
ACCD serves Bexar County with 2-year college curriculums at Palo Alto College (PAC), St. Phillip?’s College (SPC), San Antonio College (SAC) and Northwest Vista College (NVC) campuses. They offer associate degrees, certificates & licensures, arts and science courses that will transfer to 4-year colleges. Three of the campuses ( PAC, SPC, & SAC) will be offering Toyota-related training. In 2003, there were 48,984 students registered in ACCD colleges; with more than 8,000 registered in 200 Internet Courses. The ACCD annual budget is $175.2M. ACCD awards over $53M in financial aide annually. The district is funded through property taxes of all Bexar County property owners, assessed at the rate of .107100 per $100 of valuation. (That?’s $10.71 per $100 of property valuation.)
The nine member Board is elected (for 6-year terms) in single-member districts by the common citizens. Board members do not get paid for their service, however, they do get meals with their meetings and are reimbursed for any expenses for seminars, conferences, and other ACCD duties. SWCA residents are in ACCD?’s District 4. Our ACCD Board member is Mr. Marcelo Casillas. He owns Casillas Insurance Agency and was a former member of the South San Antonio ISD Board. He can be reached at 115 Wainwright, SAT, TX 78211, e-mail: ?“mcasilla@accd.edu?”, or phone: 922-5363. He was elected to the ACCD board in May, 2002; so he does not have to stand for election again until May, 2008. [In precincts 1039 & 1061 in SWCA, out of thousands of possible voters, only 29 people voted in the May 2002 ACCD election!]
