Because our new District 117 State Legislator, Ken Mercer, was fully aware of the lack of community input and coordination on the Heatherwilde Estates project, he sponsored amendments to the state law which adds further requirements to the actions of the TX Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) - which decides on these projects. Those amendments (to require proof of community awareness and consideration of community concerns) were adopted by the TX Legislature (SB 264) and signed into law by Gov Rick Perry. These changes won?’t help us, in regards to Heatherwilde Estates, but they should help us (and other communities around the state) from having future projects imposed upon them without any consideration for them.
PS?—A Legislative Committee will now be investigating how the Heatherwilde Estates project (and a few others) where handled. More information as it comes out.
