REPORT OF TOWN HALL MEETING 05/31/07 AT THE SHEET METAL WORKERS UNION 900 WEST 34TH STREET
[Print in PDF Format]
Before an estimated crowd of 175 concerned property owners, the meeting, hosted by Councilman Adrian Garcia and Councilwoman Clutterbuck, turned into a fiasco. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was in attendance for a portion of the meeting. After an opening statement by Councilman Garcia he then announced that the format for questions would be in written form on provided post cards.
AT THAT TIME THE FILIBUSTER BEGAN
For the next 90 minutes we listened to explanations on everything except why our property rights were being stripped from us. Many concerned citizens filled out the postcards which were then collected and handed to Councilman Garcia, who then cherry picked through them. When the filibuster ended, Councilman Garcia announced he would cluster together groups of questions for the City experts in attendance to answer. The results of this was that NO questions were answered, again...
WHAT DID WE LEARN FROM THIS MEETING?
We must not allow a queston and answer format to be hijacked by City officials.
That the city does not want to address our compensation rights or changes to Ordinance 19.
The one sure way to keep the pressure on, which we must do, is to write Councilman Garcia, Councilwoman Clutterbuck, the elected City Council representative for your district, all at large council members, and particularly Mayor Bill White stating your concerns.
The concept of the Floodway is correct, BUT, the property rights of the few cannot be trampled upon for the benefit of the many.
