Toonerville Trolley Neighborhood Association
15 July 2010
Monthly Meeting Notes
We opened the meeting a bit late. Attendance was down from normal (which is common for summer meetings). We met in the Chapel office where the air-conditioning ameliorated the mid 90 degree temperatures, somewhat. Our new Council Member (CM Hollowell) was present. In fact, the attendees of the meeting were PJ DiBlasi, Jan Marie Hemberger, Gail Tucker, Nancy Woodcock, Pamela Broadus, Rebecca Kessler, Don Driskel, Deonte Hollowell and Jodi Bessinger.
CM Hollowell, was introduced and spoke briefly about his status as CM. He is an independent, who lives on Floyd Street, will try to work with the community and mentioned his concern for the two-way street issue. He asked about other neighborhood efforts and we told him about the Fort George work and the Old Louisville Dog Run in Toonerville Park. CM Hollowell will join Toonerville, since he lives in the area and will begin to receive our e-mails.
There was no financial report. However, our Old Louisville Neighborhood Council dues had been paid and our corporate filing with the Secretary of State had been paid.
The discussion turned toward the Old Louisville Dog Run and fund raising efforts to make it happen. The banner will be event specific, aka "MOVIE NIGHT at FORT GEORGE" for purposes of immediate recognition. Jodi asked that we provide the funds for a banner to be used at fund raising events. DiBlasi showed the Toonerville banner that Ken Cordle and Chris Hart had made and donated to Toonerville. The blue banner DiBlasi occasionally remembers to bring to Toonerville events (like the cleanup of Fort George). This is similar to what Jodi was wanting. It was moved that $100-$150 be allocated for a banner. The motion was seconded by Rebecca. To be designed by Daniel Mason and approved by Toonerville membership. The motion was passed unanimously.
There was more discussion on fund raising. Toonerville will continue the movies in Fort George. At present, it cost about $900 to put on one movie night. Maybe we should consider buying our own equipment, to save money. Jodi says we should look for a formal proposal to buy equipment to continue the movies fund raising project.
The Poetry reading event was discussed in detail. It will be 28 and 29 August. There will be a reception ($25/person) at the Dawson's from 7:30-11:30 pm. The reception includes readings followed by a brief q & a from all three poets as well as U of L students. Pam says the response from the latter has been very positive with lots of interest in being part of this event. There will also be wine and hors d'oeuvres. Then, on Sunday in Fort George, from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. will be the main event. Those who paid for the reception will be VIPs and there will be a VIP tent. The featured poets will sell signed books.
There is also a fund raising booth planned for Saint James. Fourth Street has agreed to have us. We will be next to the beer booth - which should bring by much traffic. T-shirts will be sold and we need volunteers to talk about the Dog Park and hand out pamphlets. Please contact either Jodi Bessinger (jodibessinger@bellsouth.net) or Daniel Mason (dan@danielcmason.com) who are coordinating this event.
Other activities where brought up and discussed. Rebecca indicated that TARC was holding the second annual Center for Neighborhoods event that is called the "Grassroots Gala", to be held at TARC (1000 W BROADWAY - Union Station) on Saturday, 11 September from noon until 4 pm. Details to follow. This is an excellent opportunity for all of Old Louisville to get information out to the public. Rebecca will supply us with a list of what she needs from us to support this effort.
Don discussed the Chamber's efforts to get activities on various Internet calendars. If the Chamber gets a listing, it will get on the Louisville metro calendar and then onto the state calendar for things to do in Kentucky. So we should keep Don copied with details of any events or any flyers prepared, so they can get the widest distribution available.
The Holiday House Tour (4-5 December) will be exclusively in Toonerville. A number of homes will be highlighted. Nancy is on the selection committee, or the folks who beg and cajole others to be on the tour. Bill & Rebecca's house is on the tour so it worked. The Chapel of Saint Philip will be involved, possibly as a central gathering point.
Don pointed out that National Night Out is 3 August starting at 5:00 pm in Wyandotte Park (Taylor Boulevard and the Watterson). They will be giving away food and drink as well as school supplies for several thousand children.
Jodi pointed out that her rotten neighbors were finally leaving. After a bit of confusion, I realized she was talking about us. We have put our house up for sale.
The monthly meeting of the Toonerville Trolley Neighborhood Association adjourned at 8:20 pm.
