Each year, neighborhood groups from across the city and county come together in Memphis to share ideas, information and a good time. The annual gathering, which started in 1987, is known as Neighborfest and this year promises to be just as exciting.
The event is sponsored by the Center for Neighborhoods, a department within the City of Memphis Public Service and Neighborhoods. Neighborfest is an opportunity for neighborhood groups to come together and showcase their neighborhoods.
Patrice Hines, Coordinator of Neighborfest, encourages all neighborhood groups to come out and share stories, ideas and suggestions, including successful projects that have been taken on. It is an opportunity of Neighborhood Associations and community leaders to learn about the community projects that others have initiated or have continued and take that knowledge back to their own neighborhoods. The event is also a chance to network and meet new people.
?“We encourage all neighborhoods to participate and support Neighborfest, even just by coming out that day,?” Hines says.
Besides the neighborhoods that are represented, many local agencies such as MIFA, United Way, Tact Unit and the Memphis Fire Department also participate in the event.
Everyone is welcome to attend and in addition to the vast amount of information that will be available, people can look forward to food, games, fun and entertainment.
One of the highlights of the day?’s events is the announcement of the winners of the Neighborhood Awards. The awards consist of six categories; Neighborhood Leader of the Year, Organization of the Year, Most Unique Neighborhood Project, Most Effective Neighborhood Communication, Most Supportive Agency for Neighborhood Development (Small Business/ Individual) and Most Supportive For Neighborhood Development (City/ County Department(s), and Business/ Individual). The winners will attend a ceremony in June where they will receive the awards.
Neighborfest 2001 is on April 28th from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Audubon Park, Southern and Perkins. Admission is free. If you or your neighborhood group need additional information, you can call Patrice Hines at 526-6627.
