Mayor Hickenlooper, and the Directors of the Planning Office, Public Works, Parks & Rec, and Exise & License Depts. will share their
views and knowledge with neighborhood residents from all over Denver at this very special Conference November 6. ? This free event is
from 8:30 AM until early afternoon at Wastewater Management, 2000 W. 3rd Ave.
It is co-sponsored by the City and INC (Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation). ? 
? ? ? There will be breakout sessions on Denver Zoning Code, Generating Active Membership for RNOs (Registered Neighborhood
Organizations), Using DenverGov.org., and more. ? Donations will be accepted for the cost of pizza.

? ? ? Southeast Sr. Planner Tom Best served UP until he was reassigned last year in a general revision of all City planner boundaries. ? In a

BUCHTEL TRAIL AREA TO BE
DEDICATED IN OCTOBER

A celebration of the expansion of the Historic Buchtel Boulevard Trail will be held in Oc-
tober. ? The date and time will be announced at the Oct. 13 UPCC meeting, or call Council- man Charlie Brown, 303-871-0601.

Charlie has worked hard to be sure that the area on the north edge of the Trail would be included in the major land-trade effected recently
between the City and RTD. ? This strip of land is now under the jurisdiction of the Denver Dept. of Parks and Recreation. ? ? Charlie is helping
plan a dedication which will include City dignataries and DU represent- ation, and ALL OF YOU in UP and elsewhere (who may have
watched over this project as it evolved during the past 28 years)!

The land for Buchtel Boulevard was given to the City in 1936 by DU, in memory of Henry A. Buchtel, Colorado Governor, DU Chancellor,
and Trinity Methodist Minister. ? This Denver Parkway received historic listing in 1988. ? The original trail, park, and Xeriscaped traffic island
design was put together by Diana Helper and entered by UPCC for the 1976 Colorado Centennial competition. ? The islands were done
quickly, and the triangular park dedicated in 1986. ? The trail was paved in 1996, and the bike-lanes added in 1999. ? The site is a natural
open space ?“for the enjoyment of the people?” as it was originally intended in 1936. ? Today such space is truly a gift to us all. ? 

A ? WALK ? IN ? U. ? PARK

We?’ve been told that University Park is one of Denver?’s areas with the fewest sidewalks. ? This also is one of the city?’s most
pedestrian-conscious neighbor- hoods. ? Put those two items together, and you have the perfect recipe for an active Sidewalk Committee!

Mary Myers, Chairperson of the UPCC Sidewalk Committee can attest to our ? interest and the serendipitous way it has become
enhanced by her contacts with many other pedestrian-friendly groups. ? Starting with UPCC?’s close work with the Denver Pedestrian
Master Plan, cooperation including local and national organizations has followed quickly. ? 

The Sidewalk Committee members agreed on two top priority UP areas for added walks. ? The blocks along Iliff connecting existing
walks with ?“missing links?” (Cook to Monroe) have just been paved, creating a much safer route for UP School and Most Precious Blood
students (and us!). This link was seriously promoted by UPCC, and speeded along by Dist. 6 Councilman Charlie Brown. ? Note how
carefully the walks accommodate existing trees.

October 6 is National Walk-to-School Day, and City and State personnel have selected UP School as a focus, early in the
morning just before school starts. ? Walk on over! ? 

While UPCC?’s committee was forging ahead, we learned that a ?“Safe Routes to School?” study was done by Girl Scout Troop 2042. ? Of
the list of schools they contacted to participate, only UP School replied that they?’d love to be part of it-- ? of course! ? The School and
Scouts will be honored at the Oct. 13 UP meeting.

The 2nd Priority for UP sidewalks is to complete links on the south side of Buchtel Blvd. where no walks exist. ? These are key routes to
light rail stations at Colo. Center and DU. ? Walks need to be in place by the time rail travel starts.

The Pedestrian Master Plan is scheduled for Second Reading at City Council on September 27. ? (Always check agenda info with Dist. 6
ofc- 303-871-0601.)

To report a sidewalk that needs repair, please call Right of Way, 303-446-3469.
To report sidewalks with obstructions call Neighborhood Inspection Services, 720-865-3200. ? THEN please call Mary Myers,
303-733-1786, so the committee can track the responses to these reports.

PARKS NEWS includes word of new swings for McWilliams Park, and near completion of all the paperwork to assure the north side of
Historic Buchtel Trail is duly a part of Denver Parks & Recreation. ? 


REZONING PUBLIC HEARING IS SEPT. 27 ? 

? ? ? ? UP resident/developer Pat Barron?’s ? ? ? ? request for a change from B-2 (Business) to R-MU-30 (Residential Mixed-Use-dense) zoning for
the site on the NE corner of S. University and E. Evans is due for Public Hearing at City Council, 5:30 PM Sept. 27 (check ahead,
303-871-0601). ? Proposed is a 4 - 5 story retail/apt. complex, replacing Star Market etc., if rezoning is approved. ? ? Believing Pat will be
very sensitive to all neighborhood issues and mitigating impacts of this major proposal, 8 UPCC board members voted to support the
rezoning. ? ? ? ? ? ? 
? ? ? ? Comments (reference ?“Council Bill 602?”) may be addressed to Council, 720-865-9341, or at the Public Hearing in Council Chambers at
the City/County Building, 5:30 PM Monday, September 27.

Everyone who lives in University Park is automatically a member of the Community Council, and those who contribute voluntary ?“dues?” ($15 per year) help keep this Registered Neighborhood Organization up and running. ? 

Besides the 4th of July and the Holiday Sing events, the Newsletter, Purple Pages, and neighborhood projects, UPCC helps sponsor the Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation which in turn provides a free dictionary and thesaurus to every 3rd grader in the Denver
ublic Schools every year. ? Judging by the rousing response of UP School?’s 50 third-graders, these books provide the stuff of good reading, writing, and conversation. ? 

Listed below are the names of those friends of UPCC who contributed voluntary dues since the May UP-Words. ? UPCC?’s co-Treasurers June Morgan and Whit Whitbeck are glad to see donations coming in! ? They say UPCC needs SIXTY-FIVE more donors to meet the
