Uptown Historic Survey Workshop and Feet First Walk Scheduled for November 15
Opportunity to Experience the Rich History of San Diego

SAN DIEGO – The City of San Diego Planning Department, in conjunction with the Uptown Planners, Uptown Partnership and the Mission Hills Neighborhood Association, is sponsoring a community workshop on the Uptown Historic Property Survey on Saturday, November 15, 2003. The workshop will be held from 9:00-10:30 am. at the Mission Hills Methodist Church, located at 4044 Lark Street (at Fort Stockton) in Mission Hills. The workshop will present results of the field work conducted by consultants Ione Steigler, AIA, and Vonn Marie May, of IS Architecture in La Jolla. Topics will include significant buildings, districts, landscapes and neighborhood features identified in the survey effort. Significance is determined through resource integrity and association with a theme relevant to Uptown history. Themes discussed at the October 4, 2003 workshop included: Transportation and Real Estate Development from the horsecar, streetcar and auto eras; George Marston and the Nolan Plan; Business District Development; Public Parks; World War II and Post-War Development; the Medical Community; and Civic, Ethnic, Religious and Minority Groups, including the Lesbian and Gay community. A “Feet First Walk” of the Mission Hills Historic District, led by Mike Singleton, will leave from Mission Hills Methodist Church at 10:30 am.
