Y2K CHECKLIST
Stock disaster supplies to last at least 72 hours. This includes nonperishable foods, stored water and ample medications and prescription medication you use regularly.
Plan to keep some cash on hand and in a safe place,well in advance of December 31, 1999.
Similar to preparing for a winter storm, keep your automobile gas tank above half full.
In case the power fails, plan to use alternative cooking devices. Never use open flames or charcoal grills indoors.
Have extra blankets, coats, hats, and gloves to keep warm. Don?’t use gas fueled appliances, like ovens to keep warm.
Have plenty of flashlights and extra batteries.
Examine smoke alarms now, check to see if there is a battery backup.
Check with manufactures of computer-controlled electronic equipment in your home to see if it is affected by Y2K.
Be prepared to relocate on your own to a temporary shelter for warmth and protection during a prolonged power outage. Listen to a battery operated radio for information on community shelters.
If you plan to use a portable generator, connect appliances directly to the generator; do not connect the generator to your home electrial system. Keep it in a well ventilated area.
Keep important family documents in a waterproof container.
Check with the emergency service providers in your community to see if there is more information available.
Be an advocate and support efforts by local police, fire and emergency management. Check on a neighbor that may need assistance and help one another.
