Councilmember Threatens to Sue Village

Jul 02, 2003

Councilmember, Sue Huber, at the March 12th Village Council meeting, threatened to sue The Village to make The Village pay her personal attorney bill. Ms. Huber made the statement after the Village Council failed to pass a resolution to pay the personal attorney bill that Ms. Huber and Mayor Raylene Graves incurred when they hired an attorney on their own. Ms. Huber became angry when the Council did not get enough votes to pass the resolution and stated that she would take The Village to small claims court.

Ms. Huber and Mayor Graves incurred the bill when they hired the attorney with instructions on what they wanted researched. They were billed based on what they told their personal attorney to do. Sue Huber and Raylene Graves told council that the entire bill from this attorney was to seek a legal opinion on how to maintain their council positions. However, upon inspection, over 30% of the bill was to seek legal advice on how to remove the previous mayor.

Residents will be able to decide Huber?’s attorney bill?’s fate in November. In order to stop the payment of Councilwoman Huber?’s personal attorney bill, once and for all, several residents successfully circulated a referendum petition. Enough signatures were collected for the issue to placed on the November ballot. Residents will be able to have their say on the matter at the ballot box.
