The West 46th Street Block Association deeply mourns the passing of Hans Dudelheim (449 West 46th Street), a beloved member who died of injuries sustained in a motorbike accident in Puerto Rico on January 4th 2007.
He became a documentary filmmaker in the US during the 1960s. Hans was an award-winning (Emmy, CINE Golden Eagle) film editor with a distinguished professional career as well as a master teacher of 16mm film production and editing. He was a consultant and independent filmmaker, credited with 30 years producing, directing, and editing for companies such as CBS, ABC, and NET. Other credits include the documentary films "Bones," "Tally Brown, NY" and "Kent State May 1970." Han shared an Outstanding Achievement in Film Edition for Television Emmy nomination in 1964 for the documentary series "Saga of Western Man." The series also won the Peabody Award. Hans spent his teen years in a Nazi concentration camp. Hans shared his craft with young filmmakers as a member of the teaching staff of The New School.
The West 46th Street Block Association is grateful for the work he did every year to fundraise at the Ninth Avenue International Food Festival, his regular presence at our Annual Wine and Cheese Party held in June each year and most recently for planning and organizing our 2006 holiday party held this December. He was in the midst of beginning a new project to explore options to repaint the mural in the Matthews-Palmer Playground on West 46th Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues and began discussions with the Project for Public Spaces and Publicolor.
A memorial service occurred at the New School on Friday from 5pm to 7pm.
Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Han's daughters:
