Elections, Denver International School, and Alcohol in the Parks on Agenda for Important May 26 Meeting: You won?’t want to miss our last meeting before the summer break. The meeting will be held on Thursday, May 26 at 7:00 PM, at the Washington Park United Methodist Church at 1955 E. Arizona Street in the South Parlor (upstairs). WPENA Board Elections will be held. All current 2005 dues-paying members (Class A members) will receive a ballot, and you may pay your dues at this meeting if you haven?’t already.
Sadly, the Denver International School (DIS), located at 1101 S. Race Street announced financial problems in January 2005. You may have seen Eileen Abbattista?’s article in the February issue of the Washington Park Profile, or heard about it at our March 16 general meeting. As this newsletter goes to press, Lapita Properties (who held the second mortgage and a purchase option on the building) has exercised that right and is expected to close on the sale of the school in June. (DIS is moving to another location.) Ira Selkowitz, Director of Preservation Services with Historic Denver, Inc. reports that they are meeting with Lapita Properties in early May ?“to discuss the benefits (tax and otherwise) of preserving the Denver International School building.?” A representative from Historic Denver (Mr. Selkowitz or Kathleen Brooker, President) will give a brief presentation on the results of these discussions and hopefully will have more information on Lapita's plans for the building (or plans to re-sell the building).
We will also be discussing a process (generated by City Council) that Parks and Recreation look into revising alcohol consumption/sale rules and regulations in some Denver city parks. A survey for Washington Park East neighbors will be posted on Councilman Charlie Brown?’s website. You will be able to access the survey on-line from May 1 through May 15 by going to www.denvergov.org. Click on ?“Elected Officials?”, then click on ?“City Council Contact List?”, and then click on Charlie Brown to arrive at his website. A link will be provided to the survey. Carol Singer will bring the results of the survey to this meeting. Tiffany Moehring or another representative from Parks and Recreation will also attend this meeting to answer questions and discuss how such changes would be made.
