Eugene welcomed George Campbell a new property owner on NW 9th Place and Sonya Crawford Hall from the NF Hospital District.
Lt. Fleming said they are continuing to work on speeding and narcotics. There were two burglaries, one on NW 6th Court and NW 7th Street. He said crime is down. They have targeted a group of juveniles for the burglaries. They live in the neighborhood and are between 12 and 15 years old. Yvonne said that Tracy?’s house was the house burglarized and trashed on NW 6th Court. Lt Fleming said they had trenched the canal and found cars stolen almost twelve years ago. He said that kids between 10 to 12 years old were stealing bikes from the African American Library. They take the parts they want and then dump the rest on the streets. He suggested that when you buy your children bicycles to write down the serial numbers. National Night Out on Crime is August 5, 2003. This year it will be at the Swap Shop. They hope that it will draw people out from all the surrounding communities.
Joy from Code Enforcement asked for any problems. A resident said there is a problem with the lot next to her with dumping and overgrown trees. There is a resident who put in a very large shed it was questioned if there is any restriction on size. She said she would check on these two issues. It was questioned how long can a car sit in the driveway without a tag. She said 15 days. Joy said we have a lot of problems with cars in our neighborhood. It was also questioned about residents working on cars in the street replacing motors, shutters up all year long and trash around houses.
Sonia Crawford-Hall works for North Broward Hospital District Ambulatory Services. They have school based Centers at the following schools: Deerfield Beach High, Ely High, Stranahan High, Crystal Lake Middle, Lauderhill Middle, William Dandy Middle, Charles Drew and Seagull. The child can go to the Centers if they attend the school or one of the centers. They also take walk ins. They treat the children first. You can sign up your child with the Health centers to be treated without a parent present. The parent has to sign a release for them to treat them. They take all Medicaid clients. They have to sign up with the Health Center as their assigned Physician. If the kids have no insurance they will help them sign up with Healthy Kids. They have financial grants for the homeless W81, 82 and 83. The client has to bring personal identification, proof of income and residency in Broward County if they don?’t have insurance. She said that you could also come in as a well patient. She also sends out registration forms through the schools each year with the school?’s registration packages. Mrs. Jiles said there would be a meeting for the Charmettes and Dr. M. L. King Junior?’s daughter would be there.
Eugene showed a video on Court Watch. Residents target repeat offenders. They go to court and give victim less crimes a face. They represent the community in court. The sentences when residents went to court were over six years compared to just over a year when no resident was present. He has worked with the Court Watch founder. The Governor has worked with the founder to increase the fines for prostitutes to over $2,000.00 from $295.00. He said he would be doing a presentation in Sarasota on the Neighborhood Enhancement and Preservation Plan in September.
Yvonne announced her class reunion. There will be a dance at the Elks Ballroom on July 18, 2003 and she has tickets. A portion of the ticket price will go to a scholarship to a Dillard Senior.
