Sister Snell started our meeting with prayer.
Lt. Fleming gave the crime report, two cars broken into and one arrest has been made. A car was stolen, two resident burglaries and one robbery in Riverside store. Two warrants were served for narcotics. Eugene asked if all the Officers working in our neighborhood have a copy of the Neighborhood Enhancement and Preservation Plan. Lt Fleming said they would now that it is effective and the signs are up. Yvonne questioned why we still see the buses coming into our neighborhood. Lt Fleming asked that each time we see the buses to call the non-emergency number 954 765-4321 to have a Deputy dispatched while the bus is still here. Since the signs are posted that we have the Plan the buses are in violation and can be ticketed.
Caroline Penn one of our new residents said she sees the Deputies in our neighborhood and feels more secure. She is also glad that the two houses on 8th Street have been cleaned up. She said that on 8th Street and 27th Avenue you have to be very careful because people on bicycles and walking don?’t stop. Also that it is hard to see around the building on 27th Avenue. She will also be the Chairperson for our Sunshine Committee.
Betty Coppett asked if there are a lot of HUD houses in our neighborhood?
Rebecca from Florida Kidcare explained how this program works. It is free or at a low cost for those who qualify. She passed out brochures on the plan. They have $2,000,000.00 for Broward Healthcare for kids. The premium is $15 for those who qualify and Tallahassee pays the rest. There is a buy in program available for those who are over the income. They would pay $89.00 per child. Grandmothers and Guardians can apply for a child or children in their care. If the child is under five they can apply for Medicaid. Money is raised in the community and the Federal government matches it to fund this program. She left additional applications and brochures for our neighborhood.
Scott from Code Enforcement said that eight houses on NW 7th Street have been addressed for violations. The house numbers are 2850, 2851, 2849, 2822, 2814, 3040 and 3060. He said that Kelly Sod liens would be foreclosed on. This is being done to try to get him to clean up the property.
A motion was made by Carolyn Penn and seconded by Ivette Brown Spence to sign the Memorandum of Understanding for beautification between Broward County and Washington Park Civic Association. The grant is for $100,000.00. The motion was voted on and it was a unanimous decision to sign the Memorandum.
There are complaints about the trees in the planters. There is a clause in the contract for the contractor to maintain them for one year. It is a vague clause. The trees need watering. The gutters are collecting a lot of leaves and trash and it will damage the manhole. We want the County to maintain the trees and gutters because they are on the County?’s right away.
The Neighborhood Enhancement and Preservation Council will give a report every month at the Civic Association Meeting of the status of things that are being worked on. We have traffic problems. One suggestion is to have one-way streets and four way stop signs on every intersection. Mrs. Glee made a motion and it was seconded by Mr Mackey for the NEP Council to do the research on one-way streets to help resolve traffic problems. It was voted on and a unanimous a vote was made for the NEP Council to work on this.
Yvonne gave out a copy of the African American Library schedule. On our website you can post information by clicking on new members. We have announcements and other helpful information on the website. Some people who have gotten grants for work to be done on their homes are having problems. The problems need to be referred to the County. The homeowner needs to write a letter stating what you wanted done and what was not done incorrectly.
Caroline Penn made a motion to donate $25.00 to sponsor a needy child in the pageant through Mrs. Jiles. It was voted on and a unanimous decision was made to make the donation from the Washington Park Civic Association. Caroline donated an additional $25.00.
The election for the Civic Association will be on April 10, 2003 and for the NEP Council on May 8, 2003.
Dues collected tonight $142.00 and last month was $129.00
Meeting adjourned at 9:30PM
