WASHINGTON PARK CIVIC ASSOCIATION INC
P O Box 1233
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311
October 14, 2004
The meeting opened at 7:30 with prayer by Ms. Brunson. Mr. Habersham motioned to accept the minutes. We had new members in attendance so everyone introduced themselves.
Lt. Fleming update:
v Supplies taken from a house under construction
v 2 tags stolen off vehicles
v Addressed problems with people waiting on NW 9th Place for a ride to work
v Gave suggestions for families to have a safe Halloween.
v Kenny Habersham met with owner of Riverside store along with code enforcement officer to address trespassing
v Eugene asked Lt. Fleming what they are doing about the problem of the officers not enforcing our new enhancement codes. The officers claim they do not know anything about our codes. Lt. Fleming advised us that officers are constantly being transferred in and out of the department and that they do update new officers as to the enhancement plans. Julia Porter asked if the computers in the deputies cars could be programmed with125 our codes and he said no. Yvonne Sumlin asked if there could be an orientation for new officers so they can learn our codes and Lt. Flemming said the information is put in the officers?’ mailbox. Ivette advised the Lt. that she is not satisfied with the answers he has given us regarding calls the community has made to B.S.O. regarding enhancement issues . Trucks and vendors are still entering our neighborhood and if nothing is done, we will take the matter further.
The enhancement district introduced themselves. Mr. Franklin gave us an update on annexation. On November 2nd we need to vote on Bill #171, which is a law that gives a governing municipality who wants to annex a community that they tell the state and not county commissioners to file an application stating they want to annex us. As of now Lauderdale Lakes is the only city that has filed. If you are a registered voter and do not vote on this issue your non-vote will count as a yes toward us going to Lauderdale Lakes. If you do not want to go to Lauderdale Lakes, you need to vote no. Eugene advised a resident that he could not advise him on what city to vote for. Ivette advised the resident that we are not strong enough to stay by ourselves and that we need to belong to some city. Eugene advised us the county is only recognizing one association and that is the Washington Park Civic Association. He also made sure the residents understand the Amendments for the upcoming election in November and to read everything carefully. He explained what the Civic Association duties are. Eugene asked for additional street and block captains. The Enhancement District is also working on NW 27th Ave. redevelopment and meetings are forthcoming. He also addressed concerns to Bruce Lane regarding completing a house that had been abandoned on NW 7th ST. Mrs. Bloodsaw made a motion that he gets an approval to complete the house and Ms. Sumlin seconded the motion. They assured Mr. Lane he would have a confirmation in writing by Monday.
Ivette advised the residents the Broward Health Department is giving residents free insect repellant in response to the West Nile Virus. To pick up a free can call 954-467-4807. She also advised residents to please watch children carefully during the Halloween holiday. Our holiday party will be held Thursday December 9th and Sherry will call to reserve a banquet hall. The members discussed donating gifts or school supplies for the children.
Alethea Linton, a resident on NW 8th ST asked what plants are required because she has been cited by a code enforcement officer.
Ivette advised us that the insurance we sought is now cancelled. The amount was too high. Dues collected tonight was $98.00 and balance is $557.00
Meeting adjourned at 9:23 PM.
