Waveland Park Neighborhood Association

Message from the President of the WPNA

Oct 13, 2003

I wanted to give everyone a progress report on the Waveland Park ?“Action Plan.?” The Action Plan is a document describing Waveland Park?’s history, demographics, housing data, land use and zoning, neighborhood issues, and concludes with neighborhood goals and plan of action. It is based on input gathered at neighborhood meetings and was presented for review at a public meeting earlier this year. The Waveland Park Action Plan has now been approved by the City Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council. Action on the plan will be taken by the Polk County Board of Supervisors at a meeting in the near future. A limited supply of copies will be printed when it is finally approved and we will have details in the next issue of this newsletter.

One of the goals in the plan is working on enhancements to make Waveland Park a ?“pedestrian friendly?” neighborhood. Maintaining our sidewalks is an important part of that objective. Take a walk along 44th Street between Forest and College Avenues. This is one of the neighborhood?’s ?“School Walk Routes?” and part of the route I often use since it is near our home. It has been inspected and brought up to City Code through our participation as a ?“designated neighborhood?” in the Neighborhood Revitalization Program. Even when you come to an area where the streelights may have been turned off, there are no surprises as far as the condition of the sidewalk goes. You can enjoy the pleasure of an evening stroll without having to worry about tripping on uneven squares of concrete, broken or missing sections, or encountering other surprises lying below a covering of leaves. How do both your sidewalk and the sidewalks you regularly use compare? For information on the City sidewalk ordinance and possible financial assistance for homeowners whose sidewalks are in need of repair, check out the link on the Waveland Park Neighborhood Association?’s website.
