Planning for Waveland Park?’s flower garden project is already underway and we?’re seeking your help to continue the effort to spruce up our neighborhood. Dozens of volunteers helped revive one of our major beautification projects last year by planting and maintaining four flower beds. This year, we hope to expand to six gardens, adding one at the west end of Polk and Kingman Boulevards as well as at the Center Street and Polk Boulevard intersection, directly north of the freeway bridge. There are several ways to help with the gardens this year:
Tilling. Soil preparation will begin in the next few weeks.
Planting. We plan to plant the flowers at 9 a.m. Saturday May 20. Meet at the west end of the Polk and Kingman Boulevard intersection. Bring gloves, shovels, wheelbarrows and plant starter if you have them.
Watering and weeding. Volunteer for one or more weeks from late May to mid-October to help keep the flowers in bloom. In most cases, we will have access to water either through a fire hydrant, business or homeowner in the vicinity of the garden plots.
Planning. Join the planning group to provide input on future garden plots and apply for grants. Planners will meet again on May 13 at 8:30 a.m. Please RSVP to Garden Coordinator Kathy Roat at 279-4050 (h), 988-9088 (cell) or email akkr@earthlink.net.
Help us brighten up the neighborhood and meet some of your neighbors by volunteering! Sign-up sheets and more information will be available at the WPNA annual meeting on April 12. You may also contact Kathy Roat at the numbers listed above to volunteer.
