The Development Commission in March of 1999, was developed through a series of community meetings that included residents, businesses, business organizations, community organizations, and high schools in order to develop strategies that focused on making the International Market Place a better place to work, reside, and shop. The
International Market Place Plan, adopted by the MetropolitanInternational Market Place Plan outlines strategies to:
Promote business retention, expansion, and attraction,
Minimize criminal activity and reduce the perception of crime,
Enhance infrastructure and services,
• Beautify the commercial district and provide for flexibility in the
land use and zoning guidelines to enable successful development, and

changes in the International Market Place, including the fluctuation of large commercial tenants, an influx of diverse ethnic businesses, the
establishment of a Community Revitalization and Enhancement District
(CRED), and the creation of the Lafayette Square Area Coalition. These
additional changes in the area prompted an update of the original plan.
The Lafayette Square Area Coalition (LSAC) is an organization of
businesses and community leaders that encourages economic growth and
development in the International Market Place. Since there have been
significant changes in the area in the past 10 years, including the creation
of the LSAC, and since a significant number of the recommendations
from the plan have been accomplished, it is appropriate that the plan be
updated.
