Neighborhood Garage Sale and Dumpster Day

The Annual Neighborhood clean up is scheduled for Saturday, June 9, 2001. This coming up, in only about a week! The dumpster will be located in the parking lot of Westridge Elementary School from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. We still need VOLUNTEERS! Please call Theresa Johnson at 303-972-1955 if you could volunteer for just a one-hour shift. We really need your help. These events are not possible without you!

Please remember too, that you need to be a current member of the WHOA. Meaning you need to have paid your $15 yearly dues. We will be more than happy to accept your dues that morning! In addition there will be a $30 charge per load dumped. Keep in mind there are some items that will not be accepted. No hazardous materials such as paint, oil, or anything that is TOXIC will be allowed. Also, items such as refrigerators or air conditioners cannot be taken.

The Neighborhood Garage Sale will be held that weekend as well. The garage sale is scheduled for Friday, June 8th and Saturday, June 9th from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The HOA will run an ad in the Columbine Courier to advertise the sale but YOU are responsible for putting up signs to direct folks to your sale!

The event will actually begin with the children's races, which will run from 4:00 p.m. till 5:00 p.m. This will give the kids time to have dinner and come back to the park for ice cream. There will be something for everyone. Joe Peterson will once again be providing the musical entertainment. We will have door prizes and of course - ice cream! If you would like to help is some way please join us at our monthly meetings. Look for more details in next month's newsletter. See YOU there!

MS Walk a Huge Success!!

THANK-YOU! I owe a huge debt of gratitude to all my family, friends, and neighbors. Thanks to all of you our family team did indeed reach our goal. We not only reached our goal but exceeded it as well! I am thrilled to say we raised $1195.00! The money raised in the Colorado Walks stays in Colorado and helps the nearly 5,500 residents living with M.S.

I truly appreciate the support I received. Everybody has his or her favorite charity or cause that they choose to support. In my case, my cause chose me. I feel very fortunate that all of you chose me to support and I sincerely thank you!

YMCA Sold!

A meeting was held Thursday, May 17, 2001 with representatives from the South-West Baptist Church and the WHOA board. The church has purchased the YMCA site and plans to start construction after the summer. The plans include filling in the outdoor pool and turning it into a parking lot. The architect drawing of the new church is really very beautiful and has the church facing East with the new parking lot over the old pool in front. There are hopes of keeping one of the tennis courts and turning it into a basketball court. The indoor pool will be eliminated and turned into classroom space - for bible studies or marriage classes. There are NO plans for this church to become a school. In addition there are NO plans for this church to have a preschool or a daycare. The church plans to spend 1.8 million dollars remodeling the YMCA. They plan to keep the buffer zone between the church and Westridge Elementary as well as the space between the church and the neighbors to their back. Pastor Bruce Lewis is excited and happy about the new location. South-West Baptist Church is currently located at 4000 Yale Street, on the corner of Yale and Sheridan. Their current site is only 1 acre and has limited parking. The YMCA site will give them 4 acres of land and approximately 125 parking spaces. They have been a church since 1954 and currently have a congregation of about 80 members. Pastor Lewis is hoping the church will grow in its new location and bring in new families. However, he has assured us that they are not a congregation of door-knockers seeking to convert everyone they meet!

On Thursday night Pastor Lewis also had a chance to meet with the Westridge PTA during their board meeting. He also had the opportunity to meet Debbie Murphy, Westridge's principal and discuss his plans. The PTA was pleased with the prospect of a church moving into the YMCA site. Because the bulk of the churches' traffic will occur on weekends the safety of children walking to school will not become an issue.

The church needs to first apply to the Jefferson County Zoning Commission for rezoning of the property. Community meetings will be held, most likely at the YMCA. We will keep you informed of any and all dates and welcome community input. Pastor Lewis has said SW Baptist Church is also known as "The Rock" and believes their church is a "real church for real people". He believes the church will be a good neighbor in Westridge truly wants to be part of our community. Although the Westridge Homeowner's Association is sad to lose our neighborhood recreation center, we feel that the church will be a welcome neighbor and work out well in our community.

WHOA Meeting Change

It is probably obvious to all that with the onset of summer we will not be able to use the school for our meetings. During the summer please join us at 7:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at Blue Heron Park. It may help to cross your fingers for dry weather on those dates too! The next WHOA meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 10th at 7:00 p.m. Our meetings only last about an hour and we could still use some volunteers for the Ice Cream Social. So, come on down. Bring the kids, they will love the new playground equipment in the park!

The Westridge Babysitting co-op invites families of Westridge, Westgold Meadows, and Reflections to join. Exchange babysitting hours instead of money with other parents in the neighborhood. Fun events (with and without the kids) are planned throughout the year. This is a great way to get to know your neighbors and for your children to meet new friends! Early Childhood PTA
Are you looking for a fun and informative way to become involved in your child?’s education before they start school? South Jeffco has an early-childhood PTA group (EC-PTA) for all individuals, schools, or businesses that are interested in the education and development of children ages birth- 5. Through its various programs and speakers, members address common concerns and participate in activities that benefit and enrich the lives of young children and their families.
EC-PTA meets the 1st Tuesday of each month in the library of Westridge Elementary from 7pm-8pm. For a list of upcoming topics and speakers, call Lisa Woodward at 303-989-6986.
The monthly meetings will probably resume in the fall. Please give Lisa a call to find out the details.

Doggie Disasters!

Last month we reminded all to keep a short lease on our pups. Meaning that we should exercise good judgement when exercising our dogs. The beautiful weather has definitely more of us walking around the lake and in the park. Hopefully all of us are remembering to bring along a baggie to clean up afterwards! I was also reminded last month that "Bad Owner" may have been more appropriate that the caption "Bad Doggie". We need to remember to be responsible and considerate pet owners. It is truly not the fault of the dog that his or her mess is left behind. Nor is it the fault of the dog to follow his natural instincts and chase the ducks. However, a responsible owner will keep a leash on his pup and not allow this behavior. Many people with small children also do not appreciate a loose dog in the park.

So, have I preached enough? Let us all remember too, that with the warm temperatures most of us have our windows open. Barking dogs can become a nuisance fairly easily. Please be considerate of your neighbors and do not let your dogs bark all day and night. It is much easier to just do the right thing and not let your dog become the cause of a feud with your neighbor. I hope you all have a great summer!
