Whittier Resident Association

Clean Up

The Whittier Resident Association did a neighborhood wide clean up for 4 years in a row which removed over 142 tons of garbage and rubble.  This began with just 10 neighbors brainstorming on what could the neighborhood use?  We decided that we would coordinate a clean up in our neighborhood.  Novak Santitation Service were asked to see if they would help out with this effort and they said YES!.  We had the clean up at Johnston's Supply parking lot and the neighbors were allowed to bring their debris and unwanted items.  There was a truck from the Furniture Mission which took the slightly used furniture, Dave's Small Engine repair took all lawnmowers and anything they thought they could fix or use.  Bikes were donated to the Center of Hope.  Novak provided dumpsters to fill with appliances, tires, tree limbs and branches.  All fees to the City Dump were waived by the City of Sioux Falls.  It was a huge success.  We did this 3 years in a row.  The first year we learned a lot, so the next year things went more smooth.  In the year 2012 the City of Sioux Falls did the outside areas of our boundaries so this year we will be focusing on the the area of Cliff Ave to Lewis Ave, 10th Street to the Railroad bridge north.  A date hasn't been set, but as soon as we get a date set we will send out information.

If you would like to be part of the clean up group, please come to our board meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at East Side Lutheran Church.  We will eventually be moving the meeting to the schools in the neighborhood after obtaining the proper insurance.  We can always use new ideas and the people to help accomplish big things to keep our neighborhood looking sharp.
