Possible Mail Theft - Building # 14 Peregrine Ave (map)
On Monday evening 11/26/07 at 6:25PM a Windhover resident witnessed 2 white females dressed in pink and black with white pants - estimated age of 20 - 30 years old, one short dark hair, the other shoulder length blonde hair - appear to remove mail from a neighbors mailbox at building # 14 on Peregrine Ave. The resident told the females to put the mail back, they pretended to not understand English, then ignored the resident's Spanish. The females pretended to put the mail back but the resident could see they still had some in hand. Susan Waters our office manager was made aware which in turn will be making (or has already) our mail carrier aware. The neighbor who's mail was gone through was contacted immediately by the resident who witnessed the incident. The police were not contacted.

Mail Theft
Every American knows the name of the agency that delivers their mail--the U.S. Postal Service handles 668 million pieces of mail every day. The vast majority of it arrives intact, but thieves get to some of it before delivery.
Did you know that it's U.S. Postal Inspectors who investigate mail thefts? They get high ratings for their work, in the last year alone arresting over 6,000 theft suspects.
Despite our great report card, some parts of the country are dealing with "volume" mail thefts, particularly Tucson and Phoenix, AZ, and portions of California and Texas.
Thieves steal mail from postal trucks, collection boxes, apartment mailbox panels, co-op mailing racks, and neighborhood delivery and collection box units. They want your checks, your credit card applications, your bank account statements.
Postal Inspectors are using a number of proven remedies to put a stop to the problem. Even better, they've teamed with Postal Service officials to implement brand-new strategies that thieves are bound to dislike. Report mail theft online or report suspected identity theft.
Thieves want your mail. Don't be a victim!

Experts Give Tips For Stopping Holiday Identity Theft

The holiday season puts shoppers at risk for identity theft.
A new cross-cut shredder is essential to protect yourself, experts said.

Experts said straight cut shredders aren't good enough anymore.
"If someone wanted to take the time they could lay the pages down and tape them together to find out what was on it. Cross cut shredders make it impossible to put those pieces of paper back together," Melissa Allums of the Orange County Consumer Fraud Unit said.
Experts also said not to pay bills using your mailbox -- a red flag says there is something in the mailbox, so take mail to the post office.
When shopping online, shop only at Web sites that are familiar to you and sites that are secured.
Experts also advise using only one credit or debit card when shopping so you only have one to keep track of and protect.
Identity thieves can also hover over your shoulder to catch a snapshot of your credit card.
"Yes, they do. And that's why a lot of people say 'I don't know where my credit card was taken. I've always had possession of it.' They don't have to have possession of it anymore," Allums said.
Lastly, experts said shoppers are better off using a credit card instead of a debit card because with a debit card the money is coming directly out of a checking account.
"If you use your debit card, that money is gone, so then they will do an investigation and decide if they are going to put the money back, but in the meantime you don't have the money," Allums said. To comment on this story, send an e-mail to Michelle Meredith.
