** Residents learn of area development plans and hear from Bonnie Conner **
Almost fifty residents attended the annual membership meeting of the Woods of Shavano (WOS) Community Association February 24. Residents learned more details about the City of Shavano Park?’s development planned alongside the Woods of Shavano from Councilwoman Bonnie Conner.
The councilwoman encouraged residents to stay involved in the details of the planned development of commercial sites on the land behind Indian Woods and Hidden Glen Woods. She noted the developer, Denton Communities, is ?“one of the better developers in the area?” and encouraged the WOS community to work with the developer to try and assure certain landscaping and greenbelt provisions are included in the plans. To that end, a special committee was established for interested community members to be involved and keep regularly informed on the issue. WOS Board member, Bill Noble, was named to head the committee.
Councilwoman Conner also discussed other issues impacting Council District 8, including environmental issues, traffic concerns along De Zavala Road especially at I-10, street repairs, and the need for park and recreation areas near Woods of Shavano. Some residents expressed concern with the timing of trafficlights on De Zavala. The councilwoman suggested that anyone with concerns call the city?’s chief traffic engineer, Andy Ballard, at 207-7765.
The 2000 budget was presented and approved. Meeting attendees also learned that H.B. Zachary has completed use of the WOS Park and has installed a sprinkler system (cost $4000) as payment in kind. The community entryway facelifts have been completed. Members had very positive comments regarding the new look. Cost for this project was $21,000. Half of this amount was covered through the generous donations of community members and businesses with the remaining amount coming from the operating budget.
Other items of interest included word that St. Francis Church at De Zavala and Indian Woods will soon be building a new sanctuary on the land they now occupy. Lastly, elections to the board of directors were held. Each year half of the board is elected to two-year terms. This year, Phil King, Bill Noble, Steve Davis, Lauren Sturgess, John Ruiz and Betsy Westerman were confirmed. In follow up to the annual meeting the board of directors met and elected new officers on March 2, 2000. Officers for 2000 are President, Phil King; Vice President, Bill Noble; Treasurer, Steve Davis; Secretary, Roy Rodriguez. Mike Popowich is stepping down as vice president, but will continue his active involvement on the board.
