(March 8, 2012) -- The incumbent and the challenger seeking the
public's votes that would give them voting power for the next four years
on decisions on how LB's schools are run -- from budget cuts to
academic matters -- faced off in a forum presented by the Wrigley
Association on Monday March. 5.
LB School Board president Dr. Felton Williams (in photo below, left)
cited his experience, LB schools' academic performance and awards and
recognitions crediting LBUSD for its accomplishments. Challenger
Ricardo Linarez (in photo below, right) cited his experince as a school
parent, challenged the incumbent on academic performance, criticized
district costs for consultants and travel and said LBUSD's six page
public budget document showed a lack of transparency that he would
change.
LBReport.com provides on-demand access to the candidate
forum -- using the internet to expand the event's reach from one room on
one night to entire the community 24/7. To launch audio, click here.
Among those attending the event at Wrigley's Veterans Park was School
Board member John McGinnis. Also visible: two of the 27 individuals
who applied to be considered for appointment (by the School Board) to
the ELB School Board District seat recently vacated by Dr. David Barton
(citing health reasons): Diane Ripley (LB native, longtime community
advocate and public affairs specialist) and Gavin McKiernan (former
Wrigley resident, now lives in ELB) who moderated the Wrigley forum.
Voters in School Board District 2 (map below) will make the decision
that will affect students, parents, teachers and taxpayers throughout
LBUSD (includes all of LB and part of Lakewood + Catalina); each of the
LB School Board's five members has a co-equal decision-making vote.
Voting begins in just days with vote by mail ballots; polling place "election day" is April 10.
LBReport.com has for years provided detailed,
independent, website-of-record style coverage of LB's elections and will
do so (again) in this race and others in the 2012 election cycle.
