I wasn’t always a teacher; but I think I always wanted to be one. I had worked in the computer industry for twenty-seven years, and I was the mayor of a little town in Minnesota for awhile. Both of these vocations were interesting, and I’m sure that my efforts contributed positively in some way; at least I hope so. But one day, after I was retired from all of that, the Amphitheater School District changed everything.
By chance, I received a flyer from my daughter’s elementary school advertising a need for substitute teachers. I thought, “This looks interesting…looks like something that will occupy my time for a few days a month….” So, I became a substitute teacher. It didn’t take long before I knew that this was it. This was the job that I had waited for forty adult years to come along. I went back to school, received my teacher’s certification and have been teaching ever since. One of the most valuable things that we as teachers can do for our students is to be ourselves among them, to speak naturally about our own lives, our work, interests and hopes for them, in order to widen their perspective of their world.
RecentIy, have had the pleasure of serving on the Board of Directors of the Suffolk Hills Property Owners Association. This group is dedicated to providing a safe and beautiful neighborhood in which we all can enjoy our lives. I encourage each of the residents of Suffolk Hills to join our Association and, to contribute in your own way to improving our quality of life.
