Tennis Court - Restore or Remove

Why do we need the special asphalt for tennis courts?  Anything smooth and solid would work for playing tennis.  We don't need a professional tennis court here for what use it would get.  Has anyone looked into just filling the cracks kinda like they do with potholes, fill it and smooth it with the rest of the surface?

I think this is a very good idea!  We might as well use all of that open space which takes a lot from the environment to upkeep (mowing a lawn for 1 hour = driving your car 350 miles), to give back to our environment and invest in organic sustainable gardening.
