Minutes of Monthly Meeting
Wednesday, January 23, 2008

The meeting was called to order by the President, James Burt

The prayer was given by Rev. Cecil Smith

Members recited Pledge of Allegiance

Mr. Burt announced that this was the first meeting of the new year and dues have been increased to $20 per year.

Members in attendance introduced themselves

Minutes from last meeting were not read because the Secretary was absent.

Mr. Wilson reported that the bank statement closes on the 22nd of the month, so it is not yet available. However, he said, the Club has approximately $1,000 in the bank. He added that, thus far, about 8-10 people have paid their dues for 2008.

It was moved and seconded that the Treasurer?’s report be accepted. The motion was carried.

There was a discussion about the tree planting campaign. Maxine Toler reported that the city has agreed to plant 9 trees so far, and that she will continue to solicit neighbors to request additional trees.

Maxine Toler reported that the Los Angeles City County is voting on a measure to outlaw plastic bags in the City. She has found a supplier for reusable grocery bags, but the manufacturer is backed up, which will cause a delay in delivery. Once received, one bag will be given to each household who has paid their annual dues. Mr. Burt said someone as the City Council?’s office distributed about 1,000 bags at the council meeting and it is possible that Danny Tabor received a quantity. He will follow up to see if whoever was distributing the bags, has additional quantities available.

There was a discussion regarding the goals and objectives for this year. It was agreed that Danny Tabor should be the community advocate for addressing the following issues at the City Council office.

Routine tree trimming
Street slurry
Speed bumps on West Blvd.
After dark solicitors
Stop signs in the vicinity of public schools

Maxine Toler will communicate with Mr. Tabor?’s office to discuss the above issues as well as asking him to resolve the conflict between the date and time of the ABC monthly meeting and any meetings held by his office.

A member announced that the FAA has an air traffic controller training program for individuals 18-31. Anyone interested should contact the FAA.

Maxine Toler suggested that the Club launch a CPR training campaign in an attempt to get as many members as possible trained in CPR, and that a list of those trained individuals be distributed to each household.

Mr. Burt would like someone to complete the paperwork necessary for the Club to become a non-profit organization. It was decided that this issue should be included on the agenda for discussion at a future meeting.

Rose Levy suggested that the meeting flyer be improved by using colorful paper and a more inviting layout. She also feels that we need a strong group of 10 or more members to help accomplish the club?’s objectives. She will take it upon herself to achieve this goal. She also suggested that we pursue organizing holiday parties for the children in the community.

A discussion was held about how we could best utilize the monthly flyer. It was suggested that we continue to use the reverse side of the flyer to solicit participation in various activities. Additionally, it was suggested that the Club might want to organize a community garage sale, among other things.

Motion to adjourn was moved and seconded.
