Watch out for the Sex Offender

In response to Ms. Lemon's Sept. 15th letter regarding the notice she received in the mail regarding a sex offender living in her neighborhood. Ms. Lemon's is right to be concerned, as we all should be when we have a registered sex offender move into our neighborhood. However, Ms. Lemon's concern should not be totally focused on the danger she is aware of, but of the danger she doesn't know. Most children who are sexually abused are not molested by a total stranger, but by a trusted person. Think of the people you and your child trust. Those people have the most unsupervised access to your child, and can manipulate your child easier than a stranger. After all, we all warn our children about strangers, but do we educate them about personal space and what is their personal zone? Talk to your child about these issues, and encourage your school to allow the W.H.O. program into your child?’s class. This program educates children about personal safety in a age appropriate manner. (Call the Regional Crime Crisis Victim Center 677 7895, for more information).
And yes, that sex offender does have rights. However, everyone does, so remember public information is exactly that. You are well within your rights to make sure everyone who lives in your neighborhood is aware that a sex offender has moved in, and if they rent the property you can let the owner know that you don't appreciate them renting to a sex offender. Still, not happy? Go to your City Council and ask for ordinances that govern where sex offenders can live. These ordinances are governed by State and Federal laws. And please be aware, the online data bases can be extremely misleading and outdated. Check with your Police Department and Community Supervision Department to verify that your information is accurate and up to date.
There are no reliable statistics concerning recidivism rates for sex offenders. Bottom line once, is one time to many. So, how can you help not only your child but all children? Talk to them and LISTEN to them. Trust your child when they tell you verbally or nonverbally that someone makes them uncomfortable. Trust your instincts, if you feel uncomfortable leaving your child with someone, even a close relative or friend, don?’t. Quite often we pick up unconsciously on cues that make us uncomfortable, but feel foolish heeding them. Personally, I?’ll act the fool any day when it comes to protecting my children.
I assume that you know and have taught your child all the standard stranger rules. But, have you discussed who is and isn?’t a stranger? After all isn?’t everyone a stranger, until you are introduced? When your children go play at someone else?’s house, have you met the responsible adults who will be present? What about internet safety? Who are your children talking to online? Don?’t wait until you get that reminder in the mail to go over safety rules with your children. Remember, ?‘forewarned, is for armed.?’
