About Alpha Block Watch

Alpha Block Watch was formed in August 2005 after a very violent summer in the nearby area.  Four individuals were murdered within a six block radius of this block watch.  Concerned neighbors banded together to form the block watch to combat the violence and take the neighborhood back to safety.

With the help of the LMPD's 2nd District Commander Jay Pierce and District Resource Officer Heather Gregory, a door to door campaign began to let residents know a new Block Watch was being formed.  As is the case most of the time, neighbors were interested but hesitant to join.

One of our beginning goals was to have a line of communication between residents and police.  What we wanted was information we could share with neighbors on how a block watch works, how often we would meet, and to ask the police for help and ideas to increase our level of safety.

We had two new signs installed on either end of our area, and ever since then, things have improved.

We don't meet formally or often, but only when we need to.  We keep an informal communication chain going, and we also link up with other area block watches and the Shawnee Neighborhood Association when something "hot" comes up.  We also participate in semi-annual cleanups, the SNA Health Fair, and other area events.  It has been a good community building process.
