Amberwood North Neighborhood History

Mercy Clairidge Hoopes purchased 80 acres of farm land in 1938 at the southeast corner of Alma School Road and Elliot after her husband died. Her son, John S. Hoopes, a student at the University of Arizona at the time then quit the university to become a farmer. Although many farms in the Valley had been taken back by banks during the Depression, John S. Hoopes worked hard at farming and he acquired more land including all but about 10 acres of land in the square mile within Alma School , Elliot, Warner and Arizona Avenue. He also acquired all but 200 acres of the square mile immediately north of Elliot to Guadalupe. John S. Hoopes even purchased some of the acreage along Arizona Avenue directly from A.J. Chandler, the founder of Chandler.

The Hoopes family built several homes in the area that are still here today. The original house that Mercy Clairidge Hoopes built is now the Farm House office building on Elliot Road just east of the Fry's grocery store near the Alma School and Elliot Road intersection. She lived in that house until her death in 1968.

About our association

Amberwood North Neighborhood Organization:

The Amberwood North neighborhood is considered to be a "traditional" neighborhood because it is NOT governed by a Homeowner's Association. In order to participate in the City of Chandler's Neighborhood Programs and to insure that the transition of our aging neighborhood is not one of gradual decline, a group of residents formed the Amberwood North Neighborhood Organization on November 15, 2005.

The purpose of the organization, and the task of Active Members who join, is to consider and act upon issues that affect the quality of life in our community. The Amberwood Neighborhood Organization, looks to the residents of our community for ideas, suggestions, feedback, and communication in general. It is all about the people and families who invest in this community with their time, talents, and resources that provides the sustained vitality which is to keep Amberwood North vibrant for decades.

Every neighbor is encouraged to participate and is welcome to become an Active Committee Member, after all, knowing your neighbors makes the difference between merely residing on a street or living in a community of friends.
