thru the fence non-issue

Posted in: Cherry Creek Vista South
Ed, you mentioned thru-the-fence as an issue with the GV/Centennial City debate (Villager 12/24/98). While Centennial Airport is neither for or against the City of Centennial, I feel I must expand on your statement.

The Airport Board pulled any notion of allowing thru the fence operations out of our policy statement over a year ago.
For UPS to fly their 727,757 aircraft into Centennial, the runways and ramp areas would need significant (read $$) improvements. This is very unlikely, since they already have a facility at DIA.
True, they have a trucking facility adjacent to Centennial, but so do FedEx, Airborne Express, and others.

Lastly, I'd be glad to add your link to our website if you would add ours to your local governments section.

Sincerely,

thru the fence non-issue?

While it may be true that "The Airport Board pulled any notion of allowing thru the fence operations out of our policy statement over a year ago," my recollection is that this was due at least in part to very vocal comunity opposition to ongoing "through the fence" proposal negotiations. (I am this Association's airport representative)

Bear in mind that the location of the "extra taxiway" which already goes through a fence does not make this type of activity impractical, although I agree that doing them for operations involing very large aircraft would require modifications to APA's current layout, runway construction, etc. Hmm... just think about how much United pumped into DIA. Is it inconceivable for najor package carriers to decide that an operation near the Tech Center, etc is worth an infrastructure investent to them?

Matt, I think the bottom line is that politics and policies can change. Unless the issue is one of impossibility, there are no non-issues. "Through the fence" doesn't even come close to impossibility.

If he hasn't already responded, I'll ask Ed to see about adding a link to www.centennial-airport.com to our site. I think it's a great idea.

And a sugestion for you guys? I think the Centennial web site contains much useful information for the community.May I suggest that airport policy statements and regulations also be posted, whether in html or available for download?

thru the fence

I agree with many of your comments Mark, but my point is the way the thru the fence portion of the "sef-determination" article was written only adds to the half truths and paranoia Centennial Airport staffers are faced with correcting.

As far as policy statments online, we are currently creating Adobe .pdf files of airport information.

thru the fence

I have to agree with you, Matt, about the "paranoia" created by mistatements on all sides of almost every issue facing Centennial Airport.

Hopefully your participation is online discussions such as this will help clear the air.

There are enouhg *real* issues affecting APA's relationship with its businesses, pilots, and the surronding residential and business communty without having to create more.
