The city of Austin manages thousands of acres of undeveloped land. Much of that land was purchased under the Proposition 2 bond election a couple of years ago, including several large ranches south of Circle C Ranch and a large area just to the West of us, here in Park West.

In November, a detailed study was released, along with recommendations from the stakeholders. One of those reports stated that the Slaughter Creek Prop 2 land was particularly well suited for hike and bike trails.

They have also cleared about 2/3's of the cedar trees and restored the original prarie grasses. Now they have a grant to begin designing and building the trails, and all that they need are volunteers from the community, who will agree to take care of this natural resource.

That's why I'm writing. We live close enough to walk to this property, since it runs along the western edge of Park West. In fact, that land runs about a mile behind Circle C homes all the way to FM 1826.

Since we are so close to the park, I'd like to volunteer some time to help out, but we need more people. If you are interested, please feel free to contact me, or you can contact AE Martin, one of our Circle C HOA boardmembers. There is a web site that the city has setup to get volunteers to sign up, but as of today, it's not working for automatic submission. I filled out the form and then printed it off and mailed it into the address listed on the form.

If you have an interest at all, please sign up. The also need all kinds of help with other land, including the Balcones Canyon Land.

You can volunteer by phone (512) 263-6437 or emailing Gail McGlamery:

gail.mcglamery@ci.austin.tx.us
or

You can contact AE Martin through the CCHOA office: info@circlecranch.info

The land next to us is called the Slaughter Creek Prop 2 land.

Plant survey Saturday 1/22/05

This is very short noticed, but I just was advised that the city is doing a plant survey in the Balcony Canyon Lands preserve off of Loop 360.

If you are interested in helping out, call me or send an email before Friday at 5pm.

Again, sorry for the short notice, but I think there are some natrualists and landscapers who might enjoy this survey project. It will come up again and I can get you on a mailing list, if you would like to do this kind of thing.
