I want to thank those of you who have spoken up against explosive illegal fireworks. If you reside in Hillsborough County, I encoruage you to contact Commisisoner Ken Hagan SOON to challenge him (and the rest of the BOCC) to finally close the loophole that allows vendors off the hook for breaking a state law, and endangering the lives of those people who don't even realize they are breaking a law when they use these products. Hagan is running for reelection, so the time is now to let your voices be heard. While it is true some residents will (again) fight any improvements to the current ordinance, I dare say the majority of people care more about protecting people/children, animals, and property from explosives/fires. When you contact the BOCC, please encourage they suggest ideas to these people, such as attending public, contained, safe and legal displays....and/or flying an American flag in their yards.... and/or spending their money on helping a US veteran with the money they would instead "waste" on explosive noisemakers that disrupt those of us who wish to celebrate our freedom peacefully. And let's not forget about the fact that police phone lines are jammed with noise complaints, preventing/delaying responses in emergencies, where seconds literally mean the difference between life and death. Pushing this responsiblity off to the state level is simply unacceptable bc fact is, the Hillsborough BOCC has the power to make a real difference in lives.. Just as Pinellas County has done for their community. The profits and ignorance of a few should not be placed ahead of the safety and right to peace of the majority. It is as simple as that.
