Today, Ron Clark and Claudia Pillich met with the Hampton Neighborhood Office. We learned that there are grants available to help fund our front entrance landscaping project. We filled out some initial paperwork to indicate we plan to apply for a grant.
The people in the office were nice and very encouraging. One thing they mentioned is that we have to match their funding - at least a majority of it - with volunteer labor. The purpose of the grant program is to promote a community spirit in the neighborhood by having many neighbors participate in the project.
So if we were to hire someone to do both the initial work and the maintenance, the grant would probably not be approved.
I don't see this as a problem. We already have plenty of people who have been willing to help out, and others who have indicated they will in the future. The main thing then is to get a landscaper who will work with us on this and let us do some, if not all, of the labor, with their plan and their plants, and to organize it so as to get everyone involved who is interested.
Our next step is to meet with the neighborhood commission at their next meeting, which is next Thursday, March 15, at 6pm. It will be at the downtown library on Victoria Blvd.
Joan Perris and Claudia Pillich are planning to attend. Please join us if you can. The more the better, as it will show them that we do have an active group and not just one of two people doing it all.
If you can attend next week's meeting, please let one of the officers know.
We have been talking to several landscaping companies and getting estimates. After we've narrowed down the selection to a few, we'll present them to you at a neighborhood meeting and let everyone have a say in what we decide to do.
We'll keep you posted on this.
