SAVE KIMBELL PLAY FIELD
Raymond Kimbell Athletic Field (Western Addition / Fillmore & Geary)
San Francisco Recreation and Parks
is converting the 3 acre Kimbell playfield
from natural grass to synthetic tire waste.
In 2008 the city of San Francisco Synthetic Fields Task Force identified
"11 environmental and health issues of public concern".
They found out that;
- 1000s of tons of finely ground up tire waste will be used containing unregulated quantities of lead, carcinogens, and other hazardous chemicals,
- they could not determine if tire waste fields were safe,
or if they pose a long term or short term harmful risk to children's health,
pets/wildlife's health, or the surrounding neighborhood environment,
- it is expensive to properly control virulent bacterial growth in tire waste fields.
As the result of similar findings New York, as well as many other communities,
have banned new installations to prevent jeopardizing children's and public health
from playing on or around synthetic tire waste fields.
