Barrington Oaks Homeowners Association

yards made out of weeds

Have any of you tried native grasses that aren't St.Augustine? We moved onto Yellow Bluff 12 years ago and our land was cleared to the bare dirt. We have eight acres, so sodding was out of the question. Plus we have horses and they don't eat sod. LOL

Underneath that dirt is a wonderful root system of native grasses. Our lawn (the front acre) looks awesome and has thickened up nicely. You can also seed with a bahaia or other grass you like to thicken it up. I have all natural fertalizers (horse) that I spread continuously so we don't become a fly haven. The previous owners had planted several types of grass seed so its different in some spots. But it is hardy and disease resistant!

My inlaws live in Glen Hollow and put down a different type of finer bladed turf grass, I think it starts with a Z although I can't be sure, and it doesn't get tall, and has a nice short thatch that is thriving.

I am just curious as to why people go straight for St Augustine, as it seems to be a grass money pit.
