BCCA History

Birchwood/Clearview Community Association History

The subdivision in Oxon Hill, MD named Birchwood City was developed during the mid-1950. Thereafter, the residents established the Birchwood City Community Association (currently named Birchwood/Clearview Community Association--BCCA). BCCA’s mission, through citizen involvement, is to enhance the quality of life for residents of this community of over 800 homes. Several committees work hard with the board of directors to accomplish BCCA tasks. The cost of BCCA programs and activities is supported through member dues.

BCCA community meetings are held once a month. The meetings feature speakers and programs of interest to the community. Prior to the meetings, notices of the date and time are posted at both entrances to the community and published in our monthly newsletter, which contains relevant information about upcoming BCCA and local government events. The newsletter is delivered by community volunteers to the door of each house.

Since its inception, BCCA has been an asset to the community, including in the area of education. For example, over the years, BCCA has given thousands of dollars in scholarships to community residents. Also, in the early 1980's, BCCA helped the community mobilize to successfully petition the Board of Education to allow the local elementary school to remain opened to all students in the community. In 1990, BCCA held a job and educational fair for community residents, which drew officials from varies educational institutions and employers from numerous industries--resulting in educational and employment opportunities for many residents.

We are a community association that cares and takes action. In 1992, BCCA led the community in convincing Maryland officials to spend over $3 million to build sound and safety barriers along the Capital Beltway near Birchwood City, following the death of two young people who were taking a dangerous shortcut across the Beltway from Rivertowne Commons Shopping Center to Birchwood City. On an ongoing basis, BCCA works with public officials and Maryland National Parks and Planning Commission to enhance Birchwood City Park, the community building, playground equipment and recreational activities to benefit both our adults and young people. Over the years to the present time, BCCA has annually sponsored special events including:

Family Valentine Functions/Parties
Easter Egg Hunts
Community Days
Fun Nights (Halloween)
Breakfast With Santa
Teen Dances and Friday Night for Teens
Bus Trips to Educational events, Amusement Parks and Smithsonian Museums
Senior Nights
Smithsonian In the Neighborhood
Movie Nights
Donations to senior homes and families in need
