We have a cat over-population problem! There are too many cats in the neighborhood and they are causing homeowners a lot of distress. In the upcoming summer months the stench from cat urine and feces will be overpowering, folks simply can?’t enjoy their property.
As reported in an earlier edition of the BWCA newsletter, there is pending legislation to curtail cat owners. Once passed, cat owners would be required to have a license for every cat that they own. The cats would not be able to run wild; they would have to be on a leash. The owner would also be restricted to only a few cats, unless they are a licensed breeder. Animal control would have the power to catch those animals without a license and put them in an animal shelter. This legislation is beneficial for the owners, cats, and neighbors. It would make the owners responsible for their pets. Unfortunately, our Columbus City Council has stalled this legislation.
If this legislation is important to you, I want to hear from you! I would like a large group from our association go to a City Council meeting in the near future. We would insist that the ?“Cat Leash Law?” be passed. Through my association with the Northland Community Council I have learned that the only way to make City Hall listen is to make a lot of noise!

I Agree

I agree whole heartedly with Steve's post. The freedom for people to have cats running loose has gone on for too many years (decades!). After this problem is resolved, I would like to suggest the following problems be addressed (while we are on a roll):

1) birds defecate all over our houses and cars (I can't enjoy my property with this), lets ban bird feeders.
2) too many dogs are trampling our lawns, even when leased (again, I can't enjoy my property). Lets ban the walking of dogs.
3) Wood fireplaces are often spewing obnoxious fumes. Lets go after the fireplace owners.
4) Being severely allergic to many flower pollens, how can I enjoy my property with all the flowers being planted in the neighborhood? Lets ban the planting of flowers.
5) There is a word limit on these posts, so I will close by saying that I have a brochure from a large condo association in Florida which can provide us with many other ideas.

Humane Shelter in Blendon Woods?

I think that the problem here is not with the average pet lover. It is with humans who go overboard and try to save the whole world of cats by letting them all live in their home. Thus, not caring about neighbors who may not love pets THAT much! I'm not sure that I would agree with a LEASH law on a cat, but I don't think that it would be enforced, just as dog owners don't abide by the leash law. Just let the dog out the door and go wherever! But the main point here is that there should be a law about the number of animals allowed in a residential neighborhood area. If you want a farm full of animals---Go to the Country where you won't bother anyone else!

Cat Laws

I think the problem is with humans who think they can dictate laws that do not exist. There are NO cat population laws (none!) in Franklin county or Columbus. Live with it or perhaps you should think about moving to a condo in Florida where you will not see a cat for miles.
