''Yes school is open''

Posted in: Braintree
Ok, What's the call? School or no school? Just received the call from Dr. Pete saying there will be school, however, if a student does NOT go he/she will not be penalized. Now that is all my child needed to hear on the recorded message.

What do you suppose the reasoning is for the ''yes school is open''. Here it is Thursday, and the sidewalks haven't even been looked at. (Not in my neighborhood anyway). I have one child who is a walker, carpool moms and dads will kick in. My other child will be waiting for the bus in the middle of the street right behind the 6 ft. snow bank? Another question, could the ''yes school is open'' decision be to accommodate working parents? What other things are considered when making the decision to have school or not have school.

180 days

As long as the schools are open, that will be one less day to make up this June.State law mandates the schools be open 180 days.
If you are not comfortable sending your children to school tomorrow then don't do it. They won't (or shouldn't be marked as absent)

Just a Though

But since school cannot extend past June, and counting the days off they have had this year, someone probably thinks it best to open the school inorder to save a day. Because some people make plans for vacations it would be difficult to take back what has been planned. I haven't seen any sidewalks plowed either, and I have seen those 6 ft. plus snowbanks, so I would err on the side of caution and keep my children home.

180 days?? Contracts?

So the main reason why there is school tomorrow is because the children have to go to school 180 days, which I understand. Is it in the teachers contracts that school cannot go beyond July? 180 days is 180 days whether it be in June or July, right? Isn't it alot safer (that of which I know I have the option of sending my kids to school), to send them in July rather than walking in January(I know.. I will be driving them). So I guess my main question is, is it a contracual thing that makes the final decision.

I also had a discussion this week about possibily starting the day 10 minutes earlier and extending the day 10 minutes to make up for these snow days. Could this be a possibility or is there another contract issue involved.
